Fairmont Copley Plaza
Why the Fairmont Copley Plaza is the “Grand Dame” of Boston Weddings
If you are looking for a venue that feels like a literal movie set, the Fairmont Copley Plaza is the gold standard. Built in 1912, it has been the epicenter of Boston high society for over a century. It is the kind of place where you don’t just “have a wedding”, you host an event that becomes part of the city’s history.
I have photographed many weddings here, from New Year’s Eve black-tie galas to large Springtime celebrations. For couples planning their weddings for 2026 and 2027, the Fairmont offers a level of timeless luxury that is impossible to replicate in a modern ballroom. Here is everything you need to know about the “Grand Dame” from a photographer’s perspective.

The Iconic Spaces: Grand Ballroom vs. Oval Room
The Fairmont is famous for having two of the most beautiful rooms in the world, each offering a very different vibe for your day.
The Grand Ballroom
This is the room people imagine when they think of a “Fairmont wedding”. It features 30-foot gilded ceilings, massive crystal chandeliers, and wrap-around balconies. It can host up to 600 guests for a seated dinner, making it one of the largest luxury spaces in the city.
Photographer’s Tip: The scale of this room is immense. I love using a wide-angle lens during the first dance to capture the couple centered under those 30-foot ceilings. The balconies are also a great “secret” spot for me to slip up to and get a birds-eye view of the dance floor once the party really starts.

The Oval Room
For a slightly more intimate but equally grand feel, the Oval Room is a masterpiece. It is famous for its “cloud-and-sky” ceiling mural that rivals the art in the nearby Trinity Church. It overlooks Copley Square and features atrium French doors that let in a beautiful amount of natural light.
Photographer’s Tip: The Oval Room feels like a French palace. The mirrored walls and the soft yellow and gold tones create a very romantic, “fairytale” light that is incredibly flattering for portraits.
The Getting Ready Experience: Fairmont Gold
If you are getting married at the Fairmont Copley Plaza, I highly recommend booking a Fairmont Gold suite for your preparations. These suites are designed with classic luxury in mind. Think heavy drapes, historic furniture, and massive windows overlooking Back Bay.
I have photographed many “bridesmaids first looks” in these suites, and the sophisticated decor sets the tone for the entire gallery. There is plenty of room for your hair and makeup team to work without feeling cluttered. This is a rare luxury in historic city hotels.

The Legendary Staircase and Peacock Alley
Before you even get to your ballroom, you have to pass through Peacock Alley and the grand lobby. The lobby is famous for its “trompe l’oeil” sky ceiling and its marble floors.
One of my favorite “theatrical” moments to photograph is a bride descending the iconic red-carpeted staircase for her first look. It is a high-drama, high-impact shot that perfectly captures the “Old World” prestige of the Fairmont. We also love using the long, gilded hallways for creative portraits where we can play with the reflections in the many mirrors.
The St. James Room: A Front Row Seat to Back Bay
While the ballrooms get much of the spotlight, the St. James Room is arguably the most authentic “historic library” space in the hotel. It is a stunning choice for a wedding ceremony or an intimate dinner. The room is lined with rich wood paneling and features a stately fireplace that serves as a natural focal point for your vows. The best part? The windows look directly out onto Trinity Church and the bustle of Copley Square.
As a photographer, I love the St. James Room because it feels grounded and regal. The light coming in from the square during the day is soft and directional, which creates a very high-end, timeless look in portraits. It is the perfect size for a medium-sized guest list where you want everyone to feel close to the action without the room feeling crowded.
Iconic Portraits: Copley Square and the BPL
One of the best reasons to book the Fairmont is that you are steps away from the most famous photo locations in Boston.
-
Copley Square: Right outside the front door, you have the architecture of Trinity Church and the modern glass of the Hancock Tower. The contrast between the old and new Boston is a classic look.
-
The Boston Public Library (BPL): The BPL facade is directly across the street. The grand arches of the entrance are open to the public and provide a majestic backdrop for your wedding party photos.
The 2026-2027 Planning Logistics
-
The “Witness” Dog: The Fairmont is incredibly pet-friendly. They even have a package where their Canine Ambassador, Cori Copley, can serve as a “wedding witness” and “paw-tograph” your ceremonial certificate.
-
Weather-Proof: This is one of the few venues where I don’t worry about rain. If the Back Bay weather turns sour, the interiors of the Fairmont are so grand that we can do the entire portrait session inside without losing any of the “wow” factor
- The Party-First Reception: Because the Fairmont ballrooms have such high ceilings and historic acoustics, they are built for live bands and high-energy dance floors. Whether you are in the Grand Ballroom or the Oval Room, there is plenty of space to capture all the fun of your reception without crowding the floor.

Why I Love Shooting Here
The Fairmont Copley Plaza is a venue that rewards “big” moments. Whether it is a flash mob on the dance floor or a quiet, emotional first look in the Venetian Room, the architecture rises to meet the occasion.
I have a specific way of lighting these grand rooms to ensure the gold-leaf ceilings and crystal chandeliers look as vibrant in your photos as they do in person. I love being part of the history of this hotel, and I look forward to helping you document your own piece of its legacy.
