Nahant Beach Engagement Session

Nahant Beach Engagement Session

There is something about the North Shore that just feels different from the rest of the Massachusetts coast. While the Cape is all about the sandy dunes, Nahant offers this incredible mix of beach houses in the distance and soft grass that makes it a dream for an engagement session. For Becca and Greg’s session, we headed out to the shoreline just as the sun was starting to dip, and the results were exactly what I hope for when a couple asks for a relaxed, authentic vibe.

Why Nahant Beach is a North Shore Favorite

As a photographer, I love Nahant because it is one of the most versatile spots near Boston. You have the long stretch of sand at Long Beach for those classic, airy walking shots, but then you have the grass and wooden fence that add a bit of texture to the gallery.

Becca and Greg wanted a session that felt like a natural evening out. They didn’t want anything too “stiff” or over-posed. We spent the first half of the session exploring the higher ground, using the tall beach grass and the wooden fences to create some natural framing. The light at this time of day is soft and golden, which is incredibly flattering and helps create that “glow” that my couples always ask for.

Coordination and Style

One thing I loved about Becca and Greg’s session was their choice of attire. They opted for a timeless look—Becca in a flowing white dress and Greg in a crisp blue button-down with khakis. This is a pro-tip for beach sessions: neutral tones and blues always look great against the sand and water. The white dress especially catches the wind and the light, adding a sense of movement to the photos that you just can’t get with more structured clothing.

Exploring the Shoreline

As the sun got lower, we moved down toward the water. One of my favorite sequences from this session was when Becca and Greg just walked along the water’s edge. This is where the documentary style really shines. I let them just talk and laugh together while I stayed back with a longer lens.

Pro Tips for Your Nahant Beach Engagement Session

1. Timing is Everything For a beach session, I almost always recommend the hour leading up to sunset. On a clear day at Nahant, the sun sets behind the grass, which gives us that perfect backlighting. If we go too early, the sun is high and harsh, which leads to squinting and heavy shadows.

2. Watch the Tides Nahant Beach changes significantly depending on the tide. At high tide, much of the beach disappears, but the rocks become more dramatic. At low tide, we have massive amounts of sand to work with. I always check the tide charts before we head out so we can plan our route accordingly.

3. Footwear Choices Becca was a pro and navigated the sand and rocks easily, but I always tell my couples to bring a pair of shoes they don’t mind getting a little sandy—or better yet, be prepared to go barefoot for part of the session. It adds to that relaxed, “day at the beach” feel.

Why I Love Shooting in Nahant

Ultimately, an engagement session is about more than just “nice photos” for your Save the Dates. It’s an opportunity for us to work together before the wedding day so you can see how I move and I can see how you two interact. Becca and Greg were so easygoing, and by the end of the session, they were total pros in front of the camera.

If you are looking for a location that feels like a getaway but is only a short drive from the city, a Nahant Beach engagement session is hard to beat. The combination of the salt air and the quiet shoreline makes for a gallery that feels timeless and true to the New England experience.
