There is a specific kind of magic that happens during a Oceancliff Newport Summer wedding. The air is saltier, the light has a golden quality you just don’t find in the city, and everyone’s energy shifts the moment they see the Atlantic. For Alex and Andrew’s wedding at Oceancliff, all of those elements came together for what I can only describe as a perfect New England day.
I had been looking forward to this one for a while. I photographed Alex’s cousin’s wedding recently, and that dance floor was one of the wildest I have ever documented. This family came to play, and Alex and Andrew certainly did not disappoint.
Getting Ready in the Mansion
Alex and her bridesmaids spent the morning in the upper suites of the Oceancliff mansion. If you are looking for a “getting ready” spot with historic character, this is it. The rooms feature tall windows that let in that beautiful coastal light, which is a dream for those quiet, morning detail shots.
While the girls were finishing hair and makeup, Andrew and his guys were in a separate room toasting and getting ready for the day. One of the best things about Oceancliff is that it is a “one-stop shop.” You can have your entire day happen on one property, which removes so much of the stress of navigating Newport traffic on a busy weekend.
An Emotional First Look and Private Vows
We decided to do the first look right out front of the mansion’s grand stone entrance. It is such a classic Newport backdrop with the ivy-covered stone and the circular driveway. Andrew’s reaction when he saw Alex was one of the most genuine moments of the day.
After the initial excitement, they shared private vows just between the two of them. I always recommend this to my couples. It gives you five minutes to actually connect and speak from the heart before the whirlwind of the ceremony begins. It makes for some of the most emotional, candid photos of the entire gallery because the pressure of the audience is completely gone.
The Trolley to Brenton Point State Park
Once the first look was wrapped, the whole wedding party piled onto a classic Newport trolley. We headed down Ocean Drive to Brenton Point State Park. This is a pro-tip for anyone getting married at Oceancliff: the venue is stunning, but taking 20 minutes to head down the road to the state park adds so much variety to your gallery. Though, just be aware the wind is crazy and you’ll have to fix your hair before the ceremony 🙂
The park offers massive open views of the Atlantic, and we took the opportunity to get the whole crew out onto the rocks. Andrew’s blue suit against the rugged, crashing waves is a look that never gets old. It feels adventurous but still deeply tied to the Newport aesthetic.
Portraits Under the Oceancliff Arch
When we arrived back at the venue, we spent some time under the iconic stone arch at the entrance of Oceancliff. This is one of those “must-have” spots for a reason. The way the light filters through the archway creates a natural frame for portraits. It is architectural, historic, and provides a nice bit of shade if the summer sun is particularly bright.
We focused on more portraits here, letting the scale of the stone reflect the grandness of the day before the guests began to arrive.
A Ceremony on the Lawn with Great Light
The ceremony was held on the sprawling back lawn of Oceancliff, overlooking Narragansett Bay. We lucked out with what I call “photographer’s light.” Often, midday sun on the coast can be harsh and squinty, but for Alex and Andrew, we had a light breeze and soft, glowing light that made every guest look incredible.
There is nothing quite like saying your vows with the Newport Bridge in the far distance and the sound of the water hitting the cliffs below. It is a high-impact location that doesn’t need much in the way of decor because the view does all the work.
Cocktail Hour at the Tent
After the “I Do’s,” guests moved over to the terrace and the adjoining tent for cocktail hour. This is where the Newport vibe really settles in. Having a drink in hand while watching the sailboats go by is the quintessential Oceancliff experience. I spent this time floating through the crowd, capturing those big laughs and the “reunion” moments that happen when families get together.
The Grand Ballroom Reception
For the reception, everyone moved back inside to the Grand Ballroom. The room was filled with soft florals and candlelight, which complemented the historic feel of the mansion perfectly.
The toasts were a highlight—equal parts hilarious and tear-jerking. But as soon as the formal parent dances were over, I knew what was coming. Having photographed this family before, I knew the dance floor was about to explode.
A Wild Dance Party
As a documentary-style photographer, this is my favorite part of the night. I love getting right into the middle of the action to capture the blurred motion, the singing at the top of people’s lungs, and the general joy of a great party. From the first song to the last, the floor was packed. There is an energy to this family that is infectious, and it made for some of my favorite dance floor photos of the year.
Pro Tips for Your Oceancliff Newport Summer Wedding
If you are currently planning your own celebration at this iconic Newport spot, here are a few things to keep in mind:
-
Embrace the Private Vow Trend: Newport weddings move fast. Giving yourself that window during the first look to read your vows privately ensures you actually remember what you wanted to say to each other.
-
The “Trolley” Buffer: Always build in an extra 15 minutes for the trolley. Newport traffic, especially near Ocean Drive, can be unpredictable in the summer.
-
Lighting the Ballroom: The ballroom has beautiful dark wood, but it can be “light hungry.” Make sure your photographer is comfortable using off-camera flash to keep the room looking warm and vibrant without losing the mood.
Why I Love Documenting Oceancliff Weddings
Every time I drive through the gates of Oceancliff, I’m reminded of why I love what I do. It’s the history of the walls, the vastness of the ocean, and the way those two things combine to make a wedding feel monumental.
Alex and Andrew’s day was a perfect example of how to do Newport right. It was elegant, it was fun, and most importantly, it was a total reflection of who they are as a couple.
