The Definitive Guide to Top Wedding Venues Outside of Boston

While the city of Boston offers iconic skylines, many of the most breathtaking venues in Massachusetts are tucked away in the rolling hills of Wellesley, the rocky coast of Nahant, or the historic estates of Ipswich. Choosing a venue outside the city often means more space, easier parking for guests, and a sense of “destination” luxury without the flight.

Here is my expert breakdown of nine incredible wedding venues outside of Boston that offer everything from garden romance to coastal elegance.

1. The Garden at Elm Bank (Wellesley, MA)

Located just 30 minutes from downtown, Elm Bank is a 36-acre estate owned by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. It is arguably the best “garden party” venue in New England.

The Spaces: The Italianate Garden is the centerpiece for ceremonies, featuring a grand fountain and rows of manicured flowers that feel like a European villa. For the reception, the Hunnewell Building is a restored 3,000-square-foot carriage house with vaulted trussed ceilings that can host up to 225 guests.

Photographer’s Perspective: The photo opportunities here are endless. You have twelve different gardens to choose from, meaning the “look” of your photos changes depending on which season you choose. The light filtering through the trees in the Maple Grove at sunset is especially dreamy.

2. Willowdale Estate (Topsfield, MA)

Willowdale is a historic stone mansion located within the Bradley Palmer State Park. It is the definition of “Rustic Craftsman” luxury.

The Spaces: During “Tent Season” (May–October), the estate uses a massive tented patio for receptions of up to 240 guests. In the winter, the mansion’s interior Great Room offers a cozy, intimate vibe. This is for groups of 80 to 120 guests, complete with a grand oversized fireplace.

Photographer’s Perspective: The fieldstone exterior and red slate roof provide a texture and character you just don’t get with modern ballrooms. The Willowdale Suite is one of my favorite getting-ready spaces. It features hair and makeup stations and a balcony that overlooks the grounds.

3. Granite Links (Quincy, MA)

If you want the Boston skyline as your backdrop but don’t want to be in the city, Granite Links is the winner. This golf club is built on a former quarry and offers some of the highest elevation views in the area.

The Spaces: The Grand Ballroom features walls of windows and an outdoor terrace with direct views of the Boston skyline and Harbor Islands. The Pavilion Tent is an open-air option available from May to October for a more “al fresco” feel.

Photographer’s Perspective: The sunsets here are legendary. Because the club sits so high up, you get a clear, unobstructed view of the sun dipping behind the city. It is a great spot for couples who want that urban energy with the convenience of a suburban country club.

4. Oceanview of Nahant (Nahant, MA)

For couples who want their toes in the sand, Oceanview of Nahant is a premier private beach venue.

The Spaces: You can have a ceremony right on the Private Beach or on the outdoor terrace overlooking the Atlantic. The Ballroom accommodates up to 220 guests and features windows that wrap around the ocean view.

Photographer’s Perspective: This is one of the only venues that offers a “Fire Pit Finale” or a “Last Dance” on the beach under the stars. The lighting at the water’s edge is naturally beautiful, and the venue offers a “Glamour Package” with early access to a suite specifically designed for photos.

5. Lakeview Pavilion (Foxboro, MA)

Lakeview Pavilion is a masterclass in modern, minimalist elegance. It is a completely white venue, which acts as a perfect canvas for any color palette or floral design.

The Spaces: The venue features cathedral ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over a picturesque lake surrounded by pines. It can host large weddings of up to 500 guests across two ballrooms.

Photographer’s Perspective: The all-white decor and dramatic windows make this venue incredibly bright and airy. It is a dream for photographers who love “clean” shots where the couple and their decor really pop against the neutral background.

6. The Pavilion at Pinehills (Plymouth, MA)

Located within the Pinehills community on the south shore of Massachusetts, The Pavilion at Pinehills venue feels like a sophisticated retreat.

The Spaces: The Pavilion Room has a farmhouse-chic vibe with exposed wood beams and iron chandeliers. It has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the golf course. The outdoor garden ceremony area features a stone walkway and is lined with tall pines.

Photographer’s Perspective: The private veranda is a perfect spot for golden hour portraits. The mix of rustic beams and “Cape Cod classic” architecture gives your photos a very “New England” feel without being too traditional.

Here’s one my favorite Pavilion at Pinehills weddings.

7. The Villa at Ridder Country Club (East Bridgewater, MA)

The Villa is a versatile venue that offers three distinct event spaces on a single property.

The Spaces: Choose between the Grand Ballroom with its 14-foot linear fireplace and crystal chandeliers, the Madera Ballroom for a more “warm and cozy” rustic feel, or The Tent for a romantic garden setting under the stars.

Photographer’s Perspective: The 14-foot fireplace in the Grand Ballroom is a stunning focal point for indoor portraits, especially for winter weddings. The grounds are extensive, providing plenty of room for creative couple photography away from the guests.

8. The Mansion on Turner Hill (Ipswich, MA)

This is for the couple who wants a “Great Gatsby” experience. Turner Hill is an Elizabethan mansion built in 1903, set on 300 acres.

The Spaces: The interior features hand-molded plaster ceilings, hand-carved paneling, and oak floors. Receptions often take place in the grand ballroom or in a high-end tent on the manicured lawn.

Photographer’s Perspective: The “Old World” charm here is unmatched. The stonework, the gardens, and the vivid friezes on the walls make every corner of this estate look like a movie set. It is ideal for high-end, editorial wedding photography.

9. Red Lion Inn (Cohasset, MA)

Last but not least, one of my favorite wedding venues outside of Boston. The Red Lion Inn blends rustic charm with coastal ease. Built in 1704, it is one of the most historic inns in the state.

The Spaces: The Barn is the star here—a magnificent two-floor space with chandeliers and neutral wood tones that seats up to 250 guests. For the after-party, “The Cave” is a dimly lit speakeasy and lounge located underneath the inn.

Photographer’s Perspective: The Barn’s lighting is naturally warm and inviting, but difficult to light. Find a photographer that loves off-camera lights and is familiar with the barn. I love the Hillside House for getting ready or an alternative cocktail hour space.
